Big push to pass historic initiative to raise teacher salaries!
Can we count on you?

Proposition A, the Quality Teacher and Education Act, will dramatically
improve teacher salaries and compensation. Over the course of a 27 year
career, it will provide additional lifetime earnings of over $92,000
per year [Prop A. salary schedule]. There are also several bonuses and
incentives in the measure to improve and reward great teaching in San
Francisco.

The Proposition A campaign is gaining momentum, but it needs you, each
and every one of you.

The campaign to raise your salaries has gained endorsements from across
the city and across the political spectrum, from the San Francisco Bay
Guardian to the San Francisco Chronicle to the San Francisco Examiner
to the Chamber of Commerce.

But Proposition A will not win without you. We need to get out there on
the phones and in the streets to earn the support of San Francisco
voters. That is why we are asking that all UESF members do what they
can to attend our remaining precinct walks on Saturdays and our
phonebanks during the week.

Neighborhood Precinct Walk

Saturdays Through June 3rd
Every Saturday through June 3rd UESF will hold a neighborhood precinct
walk. We will meet at Civic Center Secondary School (727 Golden Gate
Ave. [map] Ð Parking from McAllister St.) at 9:30 a.m. and fan out to
targeted neighborhoods throughout the city. The walks will generally
last until approximately 1:00 p.m.

DonÕt worry if youÕve never participated in a neighborhood walk. Strong
coffee, juice, a light breakfast, and training will help get you up to
speed.

Phone Bank

Monday-Thursday through June 3rd
Phone banking goes on in our office every evening, Monday through
Thursday starting at 5:00 p.m. The UESF office is at 2310 Mason Street
(near the corner of Bay St.[map]). Dinner provided.

Please do all that you can to get your colleagues to come out to
precinct walk and phone bank. The voters are responsive to our call for
fair compensation, we just need to reach them.

TO INSURE OUR VOICE IS HEARD ON ALL DECISIONS BEING MADE, WHICH MAY

A. MIKE MCACHREN HAS ATTENDED ALL OUR UBC AND UBC/ADM MEETINGS, AS WELL
AS ATTENDED AND PARTICIPATED IN OUR UESF ASSEMBLIES AND UESF MIDDLE
SCHOOL MIDDLE SCHOOL UNION MEETINGS ON A REGULAR BASIS. HE HAS WRITTEN
NUMEROUS LETTERS ON BEHALF OF OUR MEMBERS RIGHTS.

AS ATTENDED AND PARTICIPATED IN OUR UESF ASSEMBLIES AND UESF MIDDLE
SCHOOL MIDDLE SCHOOL UNION MEETINGS. SHE HAS BEEN AND CONTINUES TO BE
AN ACTIVE ADVOCATE FOR PROTECTION OF OUR UNION RIGHTS DURING EACH AND
EVERY MONTHLY MEETING WITH PROTECTION OF MEMBERSHIP RIGHTS. SHE HAS
WRITTEN NUMEROUS LETTERS ON BEHALF OF OUR MEMBERS TO THE UNION AND
SFUSD ADMINISTRATORS TO INSURE ADHERENCE TO OUR CONTRACT.AND HAS VOICED
MEMBERSHIP CONCERNS DURING SCHOOL SITE COUNCIL MEETINGS.SHE HAS ALSO
ATTENDED LEVEL TWO GRIEVANCE HEARINGS TO SUPPORT THE RIGHTS OF
AGGRIEVED MEMBERS AND OUR SCHOOL SITE.SHE HAS BEEN AN OUTSPOKEN UNION

C. ALISA BROWN HAS ATTENDED ALL OUR UBC AND UBC/ADM MEETINGS,
PARTICIPATED IN UESF FUNCTIONS TO SUPPORT OUR MEMBERS. SHE HAS BEEN AN
ADVOCATE AT MANY OF OUR SSC MEETINGS TO PROTECT MEMBERS RIGHTS, AND HAS
WRITTEN LETTERS ON BEHALF OF OUR SITE MEMBERSHIP TO PROTECT OUR RIGHTS
AND SUPPORT ADHERENCE TO OUR CONTRACT.ALISA HAS ALSO PROMOTED SOCIAL
UNITYY THROUGH HER AFTERSCHOOL AND WEEKEND EFFORTS TO BRING MEMBERS
TOGETHER THROUGH SORELY NEEDED SOCIAL FUNCTIONS WHICH ARE A WELCOME
RESPITE FROM OUR DAILY ROUTINES. SHE IS TO BE COMMENDED FOR THESE

D. JOE MOORE HAS ATTENDED AND PARTICIPATED IN OUR UBC AND UBC/ADM
MEETINGS, HE HAS WRITTEN LETTERS ON BEHALF OF AGGRIEVED MEMBERS AND
PARTICIPATED IN LEVEL TWO GRIEVANCE HEARINGS TO SUPPORT OUR MEMBERS

E. DEREK BRYSON HAS ATTENDED ALL OUR UBC AND UBC/ADM MEETINGS, HE HAS
BEEN AND CONTINUES TO FACILITATE CONSTRUCTIVE RESOLUTION OF MEMBERS
CONCERNS TO PROMOTE RESOLUTION WHICH BENEFITS US ALL.

F. JAMIE SHELDON HAS ATTENDED ALL OUR UBC AND UBC/ADM MEETINGS, BEEN AN
ACTIVE PARTICIPANT AT OUR SSC MEETINGS TO PROTECT AND PRESERVE ALL
MEMBERS RIGHTS AND ACADEMIC FREEDOMS. SHE HAS ALSO ATTENDED NUMEROUS
UESF SPECIAL EDUCATION UNION MEETINGS AND ADVOCATED FOR FACULTY AND
STAFF AT THESE MEETINGS. SHE HAS WRITTEN NUMEROUS LETTERS IN SUPPORT OF
SITE AND AGGRIEVED MEMBERS. HER EFFORTS ARE HAVE HELPED INDIVIDUAL
MEMBERS.

G. MIRANDA DOYLE HAS ATTENDED AND PARTICIPATED IN EACH UBC MEETING AND
MOST SSC MEETINGS. SHE HAS PROVIDED A CONSTRUCTIVE AND SUPPORTIVE ROLE
IN HELPING TO INSURE OUR MEMBERS CONTRACTUAL RIGHTS ARE PROTECTED. SHE
HAS WRITTEN NUMEROUS LETTERS ON BEHALF OF AGGRIEVED MEMBERS TO INSURE
THEIR RIGHTS ARE PROTECTED AND GRIEVANCES ARE RESOLVED TO THEIR

H. LONETTA SPEARS HAS ATTENDED MANY OF OUR UBC MEETINGS AND PROVIDED
AGGRIEVED MEMBERS WITH LETTERS OF SUPPORT. THROUGH HER
GRIEVANCES,LETTERS AND COMPLAINTS OUR MEMBERS RIGHTS AND WORK PLACE
PROTECTIONS HAVE BEEN CLEARLY COMMUNICATED TO UESF LEADERS AND SFUSD
OFFICIALS TO INSURE OUR CONTRACT IS FOLLOWED.

Section 4. Elections
a. Building Committees and Building Representatives shall be elected
annually, normally in May, by the members in each school, center,
or other unit. Should a Building Representative not be elected, the
Executive Board may appoint a Building Representative to serve
until an election is held and shall seek to identify a committee of
UESF members to conduct and election at the school, center or
other unit.
b. The UBC shall report the results of elections to UESF within two
weeks.

4. DISCUSSION ON THE NEED TO DEVELOP A STRATEGIC READING PROGRAM HERE
USING NOVELS AS WAS DONE AT OUR SITE FOUR YEARS PRIOR, MANY TEACHERS
DISCUSSED THEIR PROBLEMS WITH THE CURRENT REQUIRED MATERIALS FOR
READING.
5. TEACHERS DISCUSSED RELIEF THE SCHOOL DAY WATER BOTTLE SALSE HAVE
DECLINED. SOME TEACHERS STATED THEY WERE UPSET THAT ADULTS WERE TELLING
STUDENTS IT WAS THE TEACHERS FAULT THAT BOTTLES WERE NO LONGER BEING
SOLD. THE REQUEST WAS FOR BOTTLES ONLY TO BE SOLD BEFORE SCHOOL,DURING
LUNCH, AND AFTER SCHOOL, AND NOT THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL DAY WHICH
CREATED A LOT OF DISRUPTIVE AND UNSAFE PROBLEMS DURING SCHOOL.
6. RETIREMENT BRUNCH DISCUSSED FOR MAY 30TH,2008, MS BROWN WILL COLLECT
MONIES FOR THIS EVENT.
7. SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS STATED THEY WERE NOT BEING PROVIDED WITH
BATHROOM KEYS, IT WAS NOTED THAT THE PRINCIPAL LOST A GRIEVANCE OVER
THIS ISSUE AND AGREED TO DISTRIBUTE KEYS TO SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS WHY
THIS IS BEGINNING AGAIN IS UNCLEAR, WILL DISCUSS AT FRIDAYÕS UBC/ADM

* 9.3.3.5 By March 15th, staffing allocations for the following year
are provided to
the schools, with copies provided to the Union; these allocations may
reflect District layoff plans for August, if any.
9.3.3.6 By April 1st, the first voluntary transfer process is conducted
pursuant to
Article 15, Staffing and Assignment, of the Agreement, unless the
District
and the Union agree to cancel/postpone said process.
9.3.3.7 By May 15th, a second voluntary transfer request process,
pursuant to
Article 15, Staffing and Assignment, of the Agreement, is conducted for
the following school year, but prior to the end of the current school
year;
the District and the Union may mutually agree to cancel/postpone said
process.
9.3.3.8 By May 25th based upon the projections and allocations
described herein,
the preliminary master programs and elementary class lists are prepared
at each site by the administration in consultation with the UBC and
distributed to the staff.
25.3.6 The UBC at each site shall have timely access to all pertinent,
nonconfidential
information available to site administration regarding staffing,
assignment, programming, facilities management and planning, staff
development, and budgeting, and including timelines and deadlines as
set by
district administration.
25.3.7 The UBC shall meet with site administration to share information
and ideas
with the goal of achieving consensus agreement on matters of mutual
concern
regarding the operation of the site including staffing, assignment,
programming, facilities management and planning, staff development, and
budgeting, and including timelines and deadlines as set by district
administration, and all other matters pertaining to school policy and
operations.
25.3.1 The site administrator shall meet at least once a month with up
to seven (7)
members of the Union Building Committee on matters of contract
administration. This committee shall also coordinate site elections to
identify
representatives for various other functions within the contract. The
UBC shall
have a place on the agenda at each faculty meeting, and shall have the
opportunity to make a brief statement/report on matters of Union
concern or
business.

· DISCUSSION ON CONVERSATION WITH MR.HARPER , THAT HE WILL BEGIN
REDIRECTING ALL STUDENTS WITH REFERRALS TO THE CAFETERIA TO REVIEW, IF
IT IS A DISCIPLINARY OR WELLNESS MATTER. WILL DISCUSS WITH UBC IN
FUTURE WAY TO STAFF BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL DETENTION.
· DISCUSSION HOW EERIE CONVERSATION PROVIDED AT GARDEN AND TECHNOLOGY
MEETING DURING LUNCH TIME ON THRURSDAY.
· DISCUSSION OF COMMUNICATION WITH STATE AGENCIES AND MAILINGS SENT OUT
ACCORDINGLY TO OBTAIN INFORMATION ON ASSAULT AND HARRASSMENT CASES
REGARDING STUDENTS , PRIOR TO COMPLAINT BEING FILED WITH STATE AGENCIES
ON SITE AND SFUSD POSSIBLE VIOLATIONS.
· IT WAS NOTED THIS WAS THE SECOND SCHEDULED UBC/ADM MEETING WITH THE
PRINCIPAL ,HE HAS CHOSEN NOT TO ATTEND WITHOUT ANY COMMUNICATION.
· ALL AVAILABLE SITE MONIES MUST BE USED TO PRESERVE ALL STAFF

classroom strategies, to conduct monthly provide professional

Key Strategy 1: Utilize both School Site and SFUSD professional
development in key instructional strategies, and monitor their
implementation.
· Within first six weeks the administration and school site staff will
list and prioritize professional development needs at grade level and
department meetings. Using this and additional information from various
SFUSD departments and programs regarding mandated and recommended
topics , a year long calendar of professional development will be
developed and implemented with appropriate input from faculty/staff and
UBC/ADM through grqade level faculty .

Key Strategy 1: Utilize both in-house and outside expertise to provide
professional development in key instructional strategies, and to
monitor their implementation.
Within the first 6 weeks, grade level and department level teams will
list and prioritize site professional development needs, with
additional recommended and mandated training activities to be included
through out the school year.
Staff will conduct staff training workshops, with topics to include
differentiation of instruction, Spec. Ed. modifications and grading,
checking for understanding, non-linguistic representations,
think-pair-share, Òbest practicesÓ student engagement instructional
strategies, and/or others as determined by staff needs.
Differentiation of instruction will be appropriately incorporated
school-wide, and will be a continuing topic for common planning within
grade levels and departments. Best practices will be shared with the
whole staff at faculty professional development meetings
At the start of the school year, teachers will be provided data on the
individual identified learning needs and test scores of the students in
each class so as to assist with planning of appropriate differentiated
instruction.
The librarian and other qualified staff will offer technology and
information literacy workshops and trainings, so that teachers are
comfortable using computers and internet for instruction.

close proximity to each other to prevent hallway disruptions.
· There should be flexibility in cases where special Ed and general Ed
teacher have an agreement or in case of absence of teachers. No student
should be sent to a buddy room when teacher is absent.
· Security guards must constantly patrol classroom areas through out
school day and look in on teachersÕ classes occasionally to show a
presence.
· The administration must provide a detention room and staff it with
peer resource person, security guards, student advisors only using
counselors as a last resort. Location of buddy room must be within
building as in room 101 if possible.
· The library is not a buddy room, nor place to send disruptive
students without librarianÕs permission.

Please use the information from any and/or all of these bullets to
assist you with writing a letter of support preserving our
currentÓself-containedÓ SPECIAL DAY CLASSROOM, to continue to address
our students academic and affective needs and abilities, IEP
requirements, and prevent them from needlessy being sent to additional
classes and adding to the number of referrals and suspensions these
students obtain during these periods of transition. If this program is
to truly remain focused on the promoting these students academic and
affective development and success, then at our site it must continue to
ne through our current Ò self-contained SDC programÕ anything else is
problematic and not truly reflective nor focused on our current SDC
student population, with our siteÕs minimal number of SDC teachers and
paraprofessional support.

RETALIATION FOR UNION ACTIVISM:
1. I have been the primary advocate for teacher and staff complaints
regarding principal mismangement, which have resulted in grievances and
complaints being filed against the principal on staff and faculty
behalf in my name, and have been criticicized by the principal and
SFUSD management for this advocacy.
2. I have filed a CPS complaint and assisted other staff , students and
their parent guardians in filing these complaints with SFUSD, and CDE
STATE agencies, and Compliance Officer. This advocacy has resulted in
complaint by the principal and SFUSD administrators for bringing the
district deservedly in bad light for not enforcing state laws and/or
our SFUSD policies regarding administrator harrassment , violence and
inappropriate touching directed against victimized general education
and special education students of color in and equitable manner.
3. I have been criticized by SFUSD administrators for filing these
complaints and for advocating on behalf of these victimized students of
color.
4. I have been criticized by SFUSD administrators for advocating for a
SFUSD investigation of the principal for continued administrative
arbitrary, unilateral actions and mismanagement as well as negligence
regarding student and staff health and safety, which have created
disharmony throughout our school site.
5. The principalÕs unilateral and arbitrary pushing for changing our
current Òself-contained SDC programÓ program without site special
education teacher approval at our December 2007 and May 2008 special
education meetings ignores the knowledge and experience of our special
educators with the best practices and program to address the needs and
abilities of our current SDC student population which demands the
self-contained setting as the best way to address and promote these SDC
students IEP requirements, and academic success within their current
IEPs, and rather than being focused on the needs of these students
individual needs and abilities seeks to retaliate against me for my
union activism as the expense of these students.

STUDENTS IEP NEEDS AND ABILITIES ARE BEING MET THROUGH THE CURRENT
SELF-CONTAINED SDC PROGRAM :
· SDC STUDENTS CURRENTLY IN BOTH SDC CLASSES ARE BEING MAINSTREAMED
INTO APPROXIMATELY 1 TO 3 GENERAL EDUCATION CLASSES EACH SCHOOL DAY,
PROVIDING NEEDED AND REQUIRED GRADE LEVEL COURSEWORK REQUIREMENTS.
· SDC STUDENTS CURRENTLY WITHIN BOTH SDC CLASSES ARE BEING PROVIDED
APPROPRIATE GRADE AND IEP REQUIRED CURRICULA TO PROMOTE STUDENTS
ADHERENCE MEETING OF RESPECTIVE GRADE LEVEL REQUIREMENTS IN ALL SUBJECT
MATTER, BY HIGHLT QUALIFIED TEACHERS.
· STUDENTS CURRENTLY WITHIN THE 6TH/7TH GRADE SDC CLASSROOM ARE ALREADY
EXPERIENCING TRANSITIONING PROBLEMS WITH TRANSITIONING TO AND FROM
GENERAL EDUCATION CLASSES, WHICH DOES NOT WARRANT THEM BEING FURTHER
TRANSITIONED UNDER THE PRINCIPALÕS UNILATERALLY AND ARBITRARILY PUSHED
CORING PROGRAM WHICH WOULD INCREASE THESE STUDENTS NUMBER OF
TRANSITIONS NEXT YEAR TO A SDC CLASSROOM , MULTIPLING THE OPPORTUNITIES
FOR THESE STUDENTS TO GET INTO ADDITIONAL TROUBLE ,LEADING TO
ADDITIONAL REFERRALS AND SUSPENSIONS AND OR CALLS FOR EXPULSION AS
STUDENTS HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS YEAR.
· STUDENTS WITHIN THE 7TH/8TH GRADE SDC CLASSROOM ARE CURRENTLY
RECEIVING GRADE LEVEL COURSEWORK REQUIREMENTS , WHICH MEET THEIR IEP
GOALS AND REQUIREMENTS AND MEET THEIR ACADEMIC AND AFFECTIVE
DEVELOPMENT REQUIREMENTS WITH THE CURRENT SDC TEACHER AND
PARAPROFESSIONAL SUPPORT.
· THE PRINCIPALÕS UNILATERAL AND ARBITRARY PUSH TO CHANGE OUR CURRENT
SDC ÒSELF-SONTAINED Ò PROGRAM DOES NOT TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION THESE

UNNECESSARY PROBLEMS AND LAWSUITS , WHICH SHOULD BE AVOIDED AT ALL
COSTS, SINCE IT WILL NEEDLESSLY BRING OUR CURRENT SDC TEACHERS AND

TEACHERS ENJOY UNDER THIS ÒSELF-CONTAINED SDC SETTINGÓ WILL BE BREACHED
BY CORING THIS PROGRAM AND REQUIRE SDC TEACHERS TO MEET NCLB
REQUIREMENTS AND/OR LETTERS HOME TO PARENTS THESE TEACHERS ARE NOW NOT
QUALIFIED TO TEACH COURSES THEY ARE NOW DEEMED HIGHLY QUALIFIED TO
TEACH UNDER CURRENT ÒSELF-CONTAINEDÓ SDC CLASSROOM SETTING. THIS WILL
LEAD THEM TO BE REQUIRED TO TAKE ADDITIONAL UNIVERSITY COURSE WORK

UESF's endorsed candidate in this HSS Board election is Claire Zvanski,
long-time Board member, expert on rates and benefits, and advocate for
SFUSD employees and retirees.

Ballots for the HSS Board election (in bright yellow envelopes) were
mailed to all HSS members at home on May 1. If you did not receive a
ballot, contact the SF Department of Elections at (415) 554-4342 as soon
as possible for a replacement or go to City Hall in person before 5 p.m.
on May 16.

To be sure your ballot is counted, you must sign the back of the
envelope - and don't forget to provide your own stamp. Ballots must be
received by the Department of Elections no later than 5 p.m. on Friday,
May 23.

Superintendent Garcia: ALL Teacher Layoffs RESCINDED
====================================================
On the heels of the Board of Supervisors' vote confirming their intent
to release $20 million from the San Francisco Rainy Day Fund,
Superintendent Carlos Garcia announced this morning that he will
recommend rescinding all certificated layoffs. Several of the morning's
speakers joined with us in raising the need now to reinstate the
paraprofessional jobs that are threatened.

I joined the speakers applauding today's announcement and yesterday's
vote, but I warned that we could not take satisfaction in this moment of
salvation in light of what we had been subjected to. Education spending
did not create the state's economic problems. Those stem from the
Governor and his political ambitions. While we can be grateful to and
proud of our local leaders and citizens for standing up and supporting
the children and the schools, we must not forgive those who willfully
created the situation.

But the battles never stop. Now is the time to turn our attention to
Proposition A and the only likely hope we have for raises for teachers.
Thank you and congratulations to the Building Reps and UESF members who
have joined us. We had over 70 precinct walkers last Saturday and more
than 35 members in our office on the phones one night last week.

Together we are changing the face of education in San Francisco.

Middle & High School Principal Survey Underway

Last year, UESF successfully conducted a Middle School Principal Survey.
The survey was overwhelmingly supported by teachers and paras alike.
This year UESF has expanded the survey to include High Schools as well.

Over the next week, the surveys will be delivered to the Building
Representatives at each Middle and High School. Please make sure to fill
out your survey and return it directly to your Building Rep. The surveys
are anonymous, and all results will be kept confidential.

May Day March Tomorrow - May 1st - Dolores Park

This year International Workers Day will be celebrated with a march and
rally, starting at Dolores Park in the Mission District. The event,
endorsed by UESF, recognizes the work and contribution of our immigrant
communities. It is a chance to speak out against the government's
attempt to scapegoat our immigrant neighbors, students, and families.

The rally will start at Dolores Park (18th St. and Dolores St.) at 2:00
p.m. The march will begin around 3:30 p.m. and end at Civic Center at
5:00 p.m.

California Caravan for Educational Justice - May 9th trip to Sacramento

Get on the bus to fight the cuts to education. Join the San Francisco
leg of the California Caravan for Educational Justice, traveling from
San Diego to the Bay and up to Sacramento.

The bus trip is sponsored by Teachers 4 Social Justice, the Association
of Raza Educators, the San Francisco Association for Bilingual
Education, and many other community based organizations.

Next Friday, May 9th, the day will begin with a 10:30 a.m. rally on the
steps of City Hall in San Francisco. The bus will then depart for
Sacramento at 11:45 a.m, and will return to SF at 8:00 p.m.

UBC MEMBERSHIP CONCERNS DISCUSSED REGARDING DISCIPLINE AND SALE OF
WATER BOTTLES THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL DAY BY THE DEAN.

V.GONZALEZ: I WENT INTO THE GIRLS ROOM ON THE SECOND FLOOR WITH MS
GSHELDON, THERE IS OBSCENE GRAFFITI WRITTEN ALL OVER THESE WALLS. ALLEN
THE FIRST FLOOR CUSTODIAN INFORMED ME HE FOUND GRAFFITI ALL OVER THE
FIRST FLOOR GIRLS' BATHROOM. HE SHOULD RECEIVE A COMMENDATION FOR
CLEANING THIS OFF. THE ADMINISTRATION NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS
ONGOING GRAFFITI PROBLEM.

ALL MEMBERS PRESENT AGREED WITH MS GONZALEZ ON THIS NEED

J.GALGANO: I HAVE RECEIVED SEVERAL COMPLAINTS REGARDING THE SALE OF
WATER BOTTLES THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL DAY. SOME HAVE STATED THEY ARE BEEN
THROWN IN THE BUILDING AND THIS IS CREATING A DANGEROUS SITUATION.

V.GONZALEZ: NOT ONLY ARE THEY THROWING THEM, BUT YESTERDAY SOME
STUDENTS WERE POURING THE CONTENTS FROM THE SECOND FLOOR IN THE AREA OF
THE FIRST FLOOR CLASSROOMS. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE AND CREATES A
DANGEROUS SITUATION.

J.GALGANO: MONDAY I WHILE IN THE HALLWAY DURING A TRANSITION PERIOD , I
WITNESSED A BOTTLE FLYING DOWN FROM THE SECOND FLOOR, WHICH ALMOST HIT
MS KOKA , WHO IS PREGNANT. SHE WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE TO SEE WHO THREW
THE BOTTLE AT HER OR IN HER DIRECTION.

M.MCACHREN: WHY ARE THESE BOTTLES BEING SOLD THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL DAY.
THEY SHOULD ONLY BE SOLD DURING CERTAIN TIMES ONLY.
STUDENTS I HAVE FOUND FROM OTHER TEACHERS ARE ASKING TO LEAVE CLASS TO
GO BUY THESE BOTTLES, AND OTHERS ARE LEAVING CLASS WITHOUT PERMISSION
OR ARE TARDY IN ORDER TO PURCHASE THESE BOTTLES FROM THE DEAN. THEY ARE
ALSO MIXING THESE BOTTLES WITH WYLERS AND OTHER POWDERED SUBSTANCES . ,
WHICH CREATES A STICKY SITUATION AND IF SPIILED ON TEXTS RUINS THEM.

M.MOORE: SOME STUDENTS ARE TRYING TO LEAVE CLASS TO BUY THESE BOTTLES
AND IN SOME CASES TEACHERS ARE GIVING STUDENTS PASSES TO GO BY THESE
BOTTLES DURING CLASS TIME, WHICH IS COMMUNICATED TO OTHERS WHO REQUEST
THE SAME PRIVILEGE WHICH IF ALLOWED WILL TAKE UP CLASS TIME.

J.GALGANO: I HAVE SEEN SECURITY STOPPING STUDENTS DURING MY PREP TIME
TO ASK THEM FOR THEIR PASS , AND THEY HAVE PASSES ALLOWING THEM TO
LEAVE TO PURCHASE THESE BOTTLES DURING CLASSTIME.

V.GONZALEZ: I THOUGHT OUR POLICY WAS THAT ONLY TEACHERS COULD
DETERMINE WHAT IS BEING BROUGHT INTO THEIR CLASS TIME. IF STUDENTS ARE
BEING SOLD THESE BOTTLES DURING PASSING PERIODS AND ARE NOT ALLOWED TO
BRING THEM INTO A TEACHERS ROOM , THIS BECOMES A PROBLEM AND
DISRUPTIVE, FOR IT TAKES THE TEACHER'S TIME IF THEY REFUSE SUCH BOTTLES
IN THEIR ROOM ACCORDING TO THEIR CLASSROOM RULES.

J.SHELDON: THESE BOTTLES SHOULD ONLY BE SOLD BEFORE SCHOOL, DURING
LUNCH OR AFTER SCHOOL. THESE SALES DURING CLASSTIME OR PASSING PERIODS
SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED BECAUSE THEY TAKE AWAY FROM STUDENTS LEARNING
TIME..

J.GERBER: MY CLASSROOM POLICY DOES NOT ALLOW THESE BEING BROUGHT INTO
THE ROOM. SELLING THESE BOTTLES FOR FIFTY CENTS HAS INCREASED THE
NUMBER OF THESE BOTTLES AND IN THE HALLWAY LEADS TO INCIDENTS WHERE
BOTTLES ARE BEING TAKEN AWAY FROM SOME STUDENTS BY OTHERS AND OR THROWN

M.MCCACHREN: I AM NOT GOING TO ALLOW THESE BOTTLES INTO MY ROOM BECAUSE
THEY CREATE A SERIOUS PROBLEM.

J.GALGANO: IF THE ADMINISTRATION DOES NOT CURTAIL THESE SALES DURING
TIMES MS SHELDON HAS SUGGESTED OR WILL NOT ENFORCE THIS POLICY DURING
THESE TIMES THEN TEACHERS WILL NEED TO DEVELOP A POLICY AND DO THIS.

V.GONZALEZ,J.GERBER: WE AGREE THAT WE NEED TO DEVELOP A POLICY ON THIS
ONGOING CONCERNS BEFORE IT GETS OUT OF HAND AS THE IT BECOMES WARMER.

DEVELOP A POLICY TO BE BROUGHT TO THE UBC AND THEN THE UBC/ADM MEETING.

SCHOOL.

J.GERBER: NEXT YEAR WE NEED A POLICY WHICH PERMITS ONLY WATER PROVIDED
BY TEACHERS OR NALGEN CONTAINERS WHICH ARE REUSABLE AND WILL PREVENT
THIS ONGOING PLASTIC CONTAINER PROBLEM.

J.GALGANO: STUDENTS DO NOT WANT TO DRINK FROM THESE WATER FOUNTAINS.
THEY CMPLAIN ABOUT THE TASTE OF THE WATER , OR HAVE SEEN OTHER STUDENTS
PUT THEIR MOUTHS OVER THE WHOLE WATER FAUCET. THIS IS UNHEALTHY FOR
THEM. I BRING GALLONS OF WATER EACH WEEK FOR MY STUDENTS TO DRINK IN MY
ROOM WITHOUT INCIDENT. CURRENT MEDICAL POLICY REQUIRES THAT PERSONS
DRINK 8 GLASSES OF WATER EACH DAY. THUS WE HAVE TO RESOLVE THIS MATTER
IN A WAY WHICH MEETS THIS REQUIREMENT, PROTECTS THE HEALTH OF THE
STUDENTS, AND ADDRESSES INDIVIDUAL TEACHERS CLASSROOM POLICIES BASED ON
THEIR STUDENT POPULATION.

V.GONZALEZ. J.SHELDON,J.GERBER: WE NEED TO LOOK AT THESE NALGENE
CONTAINERS OR PERMANENT CONTAINERS PERHAPS WITH THE MLK LOGO ON IT TO
STOP THE INFLUX OF ALL THESE PLASTIC BOTTLES.

J.GALGANO: WE STILL DO NOT HAVE AN IN SCHOOL SUSPENSION ROOM AND THIS
CONTINUES TO CREATE FOR ENFORCEMENT OF OUR APPROVED SCHOOL WIDE
DISCIPLINE POLICY FOR THOSE WHO ARE DEFIANT AND VIOLATE THE SCHOOL AND
CLASSROOM RULES. THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE RESOLVED WITH MGMT TODAY AT
THIS MEETING ACCORDING TO OUR LAST UBC/ADM MEETING APRIL 25TH, BUT
NEITHER ADMINISTRATOR IS PRESENT TO RESOLVE THIS AS AGREED. HERE WE ARE
IN MAY WITH NO CONSISTENT CONSEQUENCE FOR VIOLATORS OF THESE RULES.

ALL PRESENT AGREE THIS INSCHOOL SUSPENSION ROOM POLICY IS LONG OVERDUE
AND NEEDS TO BE ENFORCED .

M.MCACHREN: I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE FACT STUDENTS WERE NOT PROVIDED
WITH LOCKS AND LOCKERS AS IN THE PAST. THIS LEADS STUDENTS TO CARRY
HEAVY BACKPACKS WITH ALL THEIR BOOKS AND MATERIALS INTO EACH CLASSROOM
AND BECOMES A SAFETY ISSUE. EACH STUDENT NEEDS TO BE PROVIDED AS IN THE
PAST WITH A LOCKER AND A SCHOOL LOCK SO THEY ARE ABLE TO PUT THEIR
BACKPACKS IN THERE. IT IS CREATING A MESS WHEN YOU HAVE SO MANY
STUDENTS WITHOUT LOCKS SO THAT THEY ARE FORCED TO BRING THEIR BACKPACKS
INTO EACH CLASS.
V.GONZALEZ: WE HAD A GOOD LOCKER POLICY BEFORE THIS YEAR. STUDENTS WHO
BUY THEIR OWN LOCKS TOO OFTEN HAVE THEM BROKEN INTO. MANY OF THE
LOCKERS ON OUR SIDE OF THE FIRST FLOOR HAVE BEEN DAMAGED OR CAN NO
LONGER BE USED. THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM.

TEACHER TURNOVER, REQUESTS WE HAVE RECEIVED FROM TEACHERS, AND CLASS
LISTS FOR NEXT YEAR WILL ALL HAVE INFLUENCE ON THIS . THE MAATER
SCHEDULE IS DRIVEN BY STUDENTS AS ARE ASSIGNMENTS AND ELECTIVES. MR
